Chocolate Nutella & Orange Buns // Recipe

9 Apr 2014

If you've never made dough before or don't own a dough hook then don't worry, because I attempted dough for the first time at Christmas and can honestly say that it's not that difficult, even if you're a baking beginner. Okay, so maybe I did overcook these buns slightly, but whatever, nobody's perfect.

The combination of chocolate and orange is always winner, and although I wasn't sure if it would work in buns, it certainly does, so why not give them a go?

You will need:

500g Strong white bread flour
50g Sugar
Pinch of salt
7g sachet of Fast Action Dried Yeast
50g Butter
250ml Milk
1 Egg
Nutella
Zest of one orange

For the topping
Melted butter
Demerara sugar for sprinkling
Walnuts/Hazelnuts/Pecans

1. Mix the flour, salt and sugar together, then make a well in the centre and add the yeast.
2. Melt the butter and milk into a saucepan. Once the butter is melted, leave it to cool slightly and pour into the mixture, with the egg.
3. Mix mix mix until you have created a nice dough.
4. Knead for about 10 minutes on a floured surface until elasticy, keep adding flour if the dough is too sticky.

5. Put into an oiled bowl (vegetable oil), and cover with oiled clingfilm or a damp tea towel to proove. Leave in a warm place for approximately 30 minutes, until the dough has doubled in size.
6. Roll out the dough into a rectangle. This needs a bit of strength as the dough should be very elasticy
7. Spread however much Nutella you want over the dough.
8. Grate the orange and sprinkle the zest over the chocolate.

Roll your dough into a tight cylinder, and cut slices that are approximately 1 1/4 inch.

Place onto a baking tray. I then melted a bit of butter and sugar, drizzled it over and added a handful of walnuts, and this really gave them the sweetness that they need! Once they're prepared, put them into the oven at 180 C for 15-20 minutes, and keep checking them!

When they came out, I realised that they were still not sweet enough and had to sprinkle some demerara sugar over each one, this seemed to do the trick!

Yes, mine did burnt slightly, just slightly, but it just teaches you to keep on checking instead of going to watch The Great British Sewing Bee for half an hour...

Anyway, I hope you enjoyed this little recipe! It's ideal for making belgian or fruit buns in general as well.
